Do I have to treat my building?

Our timber is pressure treated, so it isn’t essential to treat right away but we do recommend a water repellent initially

and annual treatment to get the most out of your timber.

Barrettine Wood Protective Treatment is a great choice as it is ideal for pre-treated buildings. It provides non-biocidal protection, nourishing the wood and repelling water ingress that can cause decay.

How should I treat my building?

We recommend a water repellent & wood protective treatment is applied after installation. There are many types on the market.

Is my building waterproof?

We roof all our sheds with a range of high quality roof coverings to make them watertight, we also seal all the corners with a high quality sealant to reduce any possible water ingress but wooden buildings are not, by their nature, 100% waterproof. In heavy rain fall, ingress may occur through the timber itself and through the  corners of the shed.

We strongly recommend an application of water repellent treatment is applied after installation.

Can I use my building all year round?

There is no reason why you cannot use your building throughout the year without insulation. You will need a heat source whether you have insulation or not, but the heat will be lost quicker without any insulation at all. For buildings that are being used for offices, salons etc... we recommend insulation and lining to help retain the heat and save the cost of energy.

Do you offer electrical services?

Currently, we don't offer electrical services but we can recommend a reliable and reasonable company who we work along side on a regular basis. Alternatively, we are happy to discuss any requirements with an electrician of your choice.

If you are installing electrics in an insulated building we often ensure there is enough time to allow the electrician to conceal the electrics in the walls and ceilings, if required.

Another option is to surface mount electrics which give you the flexibility to easily change the positioning of your fixings in the future.

Can you install to grass?

No, we cannot install to any soft or uneven ground. You need a solid, level area such as paving flags or concrete. (indian stone paving is not recommended due to the variation in the stone which can hold water)

We offer base frames which are made from treated timber and staked into the ground to create a level area for us to install to. These are more cost effective than a concrete base and allow an airflow beneath the building which can reduce the chance of the floor rotting.

Do you lay concrete bases?

We don't offer a concrete service but we can install a base frame to any ground with no more than a 12" fall. They  are made from treated timber and staked into the ground to create a level area for us to install to.  Pressure treated timber has been proven to last up to 40 years in the ground!

Our base frames are more cost effective than a concrete base and allow an airflow beneath the building which can reduce the chance of the floor rotting. They are virtually mess free with no need for digging out or messy concrete ruining your garden.

What is Pressure treated timber?

Pressure treatment is a method of preserving timber to increase the life of the timber by protecting it against rot and insect infestation.

The treatment used is usually a combination of organic and copper biocide ingredients which protects the timber from being penetrated with water and insects such as wood worm or weevils. This  treatment is pressured into the timber in large tanks to sink deep into the timber for optimal protection throughout.

The copper gives the timber a slight green colour, this does not last and is usually golden brown within a few weeks. If you notice some green on your timber, it is likely to be the treatment and not worrisome mould.

Help! I have mould in my building!

If you are certain the mould is not the treatment as described under WHAT IS PRESSURE TREATED TIMBER? It is likely that the airflow is very low in your building which is not allowing trapped moisture to release.

Step 1.

Open doors and windows where possible.

Step 2.

Wipe the affected area with a diluted bleach solution

Step 3.

Ensure you open the doors as often as possible to keep the air circulating.

To avoid this happening, don't store items tight up to the walls, keeping a distance between boxes and other times to reduce trapped moisture. Do not store wet items in your garden building. Apply a water repellent to the exterior walls and/or line your building with a breathable membrane. You can also install vents to help airflow but this can be achieved by opening doors and/or windows regularly.

Can I insulate my building myself?

You can insulate yourself no problem and we are happy to offer advice where needed.

We recommend using a 25mm foil insulation and line however you would like, we choose a TGV clad, but many use plywood or similar.

Don't forget to line your building before insulation with a breathable membrane. This is an essential step to dramatically reduce the possibility of trapped moisture between your walls.
